when i say fast, the average speed, a trackrecord average speed over 188 miles per hour. the average speed. how about the qualifying record by bill elliott,212 miles an hour before restricter pilates came into place and ten first time winnersonly cup win for six drivers. that's how unpredictable this racetrack is. want to take a look at the starting grid asthe cars are about to roll out on to the track. up front martin truex jr., brad keselowski. truex 36-year-old his first talladega pole. >> row two two drivers trying to make theirround in eight.

carrying sprint on board has a 13-point advantage. be interesting how truex and keselowski chooseto race one below, one above the cut line. >> gorgeous day here in talladega, alabama. we'll have plenty of pictures for you. our aerial coverage provide from our partnersat smithfield foods. two by two. cars working their way around this 2.66 milesuper speedway. look at the race analysis, the length of thisrace 188 laps, 500 miles. pit road speed, 55 miles per hour.

the importance of that number is when theyare coming off the track going 180, 190 miles per hour they've slow down to 55 without slidingtheir tires. they want to do pit strategy. 44 to 46 laps is the fuel strategy. >> even though we've seen cars come from theback to front that fuel position will come in to play. >> this is the amazing thing as we watch thesecars work their way through the turns, the banking in the corners. 33 degrees.

it is so difficult even if on your hands andknees you can climb up the banking but extremely difficult. front stretch and back stretch 4300 and 4,000feet. impressive facility. the cars can go wide-open as fast as theycould go and now we have seen already speeds upwards of 200 miles per hour in the pack. they will fly around this track. >> already see a little bit of strategy. matt kenseth qualified in the third position.

you see he's pulled to the left. he has every right to do this to go back tothe field. the 19 of carl edwards and 18 of kyle buschfall back. joe gibbs racing showing their hand earlythey will ride around the back. they earned the right to do this with racesin charlotte and kansas. >> people can question the strategy. they want to see them racing in the front. the goal is to win the championship. they have to do what puts them in a shot.

they can watch and wait for something to happen. if nothing happens they may be forced to chargeto the front and see if they can get the spots they need. >> strategy already playing out. before the green flag flies and before theyare in these starting positions that's where the points are. matt kenseth at 29-point advantage. kyle busch 27-point advantage. they have decided to go to the back to startthis race.

>> the front row, you have two very aggressivedrivers that to keep that track position. i expect to see the front row racing as soonas the green flag drops to keep that track position. >> johnny alison two-time taught winner, heand his brother bobby alison making up part of the alabama gang, crowd on their feet. two by two, 40 cars deep. as they come through the tri-oval gettingready for the start of the elimination race at talladega super speedway. pressure has not been higher.

green flag in the air! >> for the first time been in a pack likethis. the prau get on friday you get a pack of maybe12 cars at the most. this is the first time they are on the wrtthis many cars. >> look how they spread out. already three distinct lines have formed. >> brad keselowski showed us that side draft. he pulled down the quarter panel of the 7. pulled the 78 back.

tried to clear him off of turn four. >> back into the tri-oval. two and three wide already. keselowski starting to move back and forthto block. get in front of whichever line is moving. this may be the busiest day in a spotter'slife when he's trying to let the drivers know where the runs are and where the cars are. >> an aggressive move by denny hamlin to gofrom the mid told the bottom. he's the third car back on the bottom line.

very interesting as you see the 11 right herein front of the 3 what's interesting about the 111 his teammate chose to ride in theback. daniel hemric below the cut line by six pointshe has to race. he's racing without any teammates. >> what does this middle line do? right now, see the middle line work. sometimes it's dies. immediately we have that wrong line in themiddle. >> they are three wide once again throughthe tri-oval and to the start-finish line.

unique about this racetrack the start-finishline about a quarter of a mile past the center of the apex of the tri-oval. >> watch brad keselowski when we had threelines now we have three lines to block. he's look in the mirror. paying complete attention. spotter telling him to run coming from theback on the outside in the middle. he's blocking all three lanes at the moment. if he sees momentum coming from a lane watchright here. truex a little bit of momentum.

2 car pulls in to slow down that momentum. keselowski driving big time. >> this is the most difficult part. when you have to block three lanes -- that's40, 50, 60 feet from the bottom to the top of the racetrack. brad is making it took easy. not a lot of energy but slower runs. 78 is starting to get energy. >> i want to listen in to spotter's communication.

let's start with the 2 team. >> three rows deep. denny is ahead by two out. denny will get the energy behind. truex one back. then stenhouse. now two lines. truex ahead by two. bottom lane.

truex and chaser two wide, chase one back. two wide for two rows and ahead by one. bottom line is five rows back. the first three rows. truex, he got pushed out. chase got pushed out. three wide behind him. chase has stenhouse behind. truex.

those guys are two wide, three wide behind. >> so what you're listening to, you're listeningto his spotter. he's telling him where the energy is comingfrom. which line you need protect. when you listen to the spotter say truex aheadby two that means he's ahead of the 11 car business two. the reason why that's important if somebodyis on his rear bumper the 2 needs to know that. if the 11 is behind the 78 energy is comingfrom that.

if they are separated energy is not coming. that's why information ahead by two, thatmeans no energy from that line. >> marty. >> rick, i can tell you it's amazing hearingjoey on the radio. that's when they talk about traffic. brad keselowski out front right now. the thing for the 2 team this week is oversellunderdeliver. last week brad keys said it would be a layup weekend and turned out to be a problem weekend.

they come in below the cut line. they are thinking we need to deliver. i asked brad keselowski about that fwraefs. he said listen i won here four times. i never had a car this good at talladega. that's what i expect today. >> you mentioned the pressure on the chasedrivers. how about a little added pressure for bradkeselowski. he has won the last two restrictor-plate races.

he's going for three in a row. out in front and doing everything he has todo, the last person to win three straight restrictor plate races and the only one whohas done that, dale earnhardt sr.. some pretty impressive company he can join. >> brad keselowski is doing a phenomenal job. it's more than just a driver and crew chief. we talk about the drivers and spotters a lotbut you have to have a great car to drive. brad keselowski showing the strength of that2 early. >> three wide at talladega on eliminationrace.

i talked to the crew chief. he said we have to think big picture not stopof picture of today. three gibbs cars in the back there and theirconcern is they feel there has to be five cars, five quality cars in that pack. interesting thing is going to be what happenswhen we get to pit stops. they are not too far back from the pack butkeeping an eye on it in the joe gibbs racing camp. >> carl edwards and dave rogers his crew chiefpaying close attention to that. i spoke to rogers this morning.

he was having a lengthy debrief. they spoke for 20 minutes about strategy. the strategy had been as you can see to fallto the back of the field. this is what they said on the radio momentsago. >> i think it's okay. >> copy that. we were just talking about that. be careful not to lose it. >> and they are paying very close attentionto the gap between themselves and the rest

of the field. i'm curious, carl edwards third in that draftis he in a more precarious position than the other two? >> right now martin truex jr. has taken the lead away from keselowski. keselowski not able to get down in front ofhim. martin truex jr. inside line starting to move. >> the 19ing the third gibbs car is the mostsusceptible.

if they lose the pack, teen back of it, he'llbe one man on his own. one car can't keep up. >> what happens a lot of times this frontpack change if it gets double filed it's much easier to lose the draft because there's lessair to run into. if you do not have a good pit stop and ridingin the back you can find yourself running by yourself. there's some danger riding around in the back. >> one guy who needs a great finish at thisracetrack is the 3 of austin dillon. >> very true.

he's been up at the front of the pack. one interesting conversation i had with hisspotter was coming to pit road. there's times when they may not change tires. take fuel only and change only one side orthe other. it's up to the spotter to know if austin dillonlocks his tires up coming to pit road and makes it a required four tire spot. >> what a great shot. that camera on the right side. it's pitted up from the dirt and stuff.

look at this shot. 193 miles per hour just inches off the asphalt. see the white line go by. that shows how fast these cars are running. >> that's right on the low part of the bumperof the 3 of austin dillon. once again the 2 of brad keselowski almostlike peter piper out in front having everyone follow behind him. >> i think there's an advantage a distinctadvantage. not only with brad keselowski show everyonehow fast his car s-but learning what it's

like lead. imagine the close lap. now he has experience being defensive on bothlines and understanding when he can block and when he has to give up the run. >> he did lose the lead and found his wayback into it with heavy side drafting. this is what we expected. we expected at the drop of the green flagto be protective whoever got the lead from the front row, whichever it was, martin truexor brad keselowski. >> 78 led a lap.

a bonus point for the 78. >> that's an age old debate. do you run in the front or back. marty truex said we started with track positioni want to keep it all day long. to your point truex told me listen i learnedmore about my car when i'm out front. i learn about the energy of the pack. whose good and whose not. when i ride in the back i don't learn enoughabout my race car to put myself in a position. >> chase points on the left side of your screen.

they continue to change. look how close it is. right now i can see why carl edwards wouldbe frightened by running in the back of this pack. he's currently out of the top eight. he might not advance to the round of eightif they continue to run the way they do now. the 18 of kyle busch coming in with a prettygood cushion he's also below the cut line. joe gibbs racing, this strategy could comeback to bite them. they got to be cautious.

right now still that three car back, almost200, 300 yards behind the rest of this field. they've dropped back quite a bit. >> we heard the fear running in the middleof the pack. that's where austin dillon is. he needs a good day to transfer if into thetop eight. he's decided he'll get himself in the front. he's exactly where you don't want to be. if a wreck happens in the middle is whereyou don't don't. it's easy to get run over from behind.

extremely frustrating for this team but hiscrew chief told me this morning hey we're not giving up. we still have one more shot. only thing we're thinking about today is winning. we need be aggressive and get to the front,lead as many laps as possible and win today. >> kurt busch hasn't done anything spectacular. but he's known exactly where they've needtheir average finishes to advance from round to round. before race he found it remarkably calm overthe radio telling his teammate keep it chilled.

we have more points going into this race thanwe did last year. don't jump over the wall too soon. that's easy to do. kurt busch has been running up towards thefront this entire race. maybe more relaxed than watching the chicagocubs to move on the world series. >> halfway through a fuel run as brad keselowskidon't lead. >> we talk about different strategies runningup front, running in the back. martin truex jr. likes running up front. here's why.

look at the average running position for thesewinners. brad keselowski the township two at 2.1, 4.7. low begano 6.2. what that means these guys run up front. what that does it allows them to understandhow the race is happening, where the runs come from have a better understanding of theircar. >> they do understand it better. so if you have a fast race car other peoplewant to go with you. they want to make a move with you.

the other thing is once it gets three wideand four wide where your going? how do you come from the back if there's nolane to go in. when you wait around too long there's no longera place to go. you're just stuck in having to ride that line. when you make that charge you have to do itearly enough. >> that's the point. think of these joe gibbs cars ridge in theback. it's a safer position, the list of thingsthat can go wrong will come at 50 or so laps at green flag pit spots.

if they are six seconds behind the pack theywill lose the draft. three wide, all three lanes are blocked. if they try to go to the front, they can'twait. they have to do it earlier, maybe halfway. when do they risk getting in the pack. >> i think their team will be forced to tellthem when it's about ten to go for the pit stop. you don't close it up. you can't trust your pit crew that much.

>> 25 laps into this. let's see who is on the move brought to bytire rack. >> normally we see drivers going to the frontof the pack. here we talk about strategies. two different strategies. kenseth has fallen back 34. >> he's playing a strategy. we keep talking about kevin harvick how hehas nothing to lose or nothing to gain because he's in the round of eight.

i disagree. i don't think kevin harvick wants to racethat 2 car or 24 car in the next round. if he can win this race key control who movesinto the round ever eight. he has a lot on the line. who i do have to beat? who do i think is the toughest competition. kevin harvick will play role in this race. >> big move for chase elliott as he goes forthread. chase elliott in a must-win situation.

looking for every point he can possibly get. if he leads this lap that's a bonus point. one less position that he might have to tryto fight for on the track. >> watch out. keselowski watch him side draft. watch him try to slow down the 24. we see how aggressive brad has been. let's see how aggressive he's twoilg be rightnow in getting that lead back. he has his teammate behind him.

that shuffle has got log behind him. >> kevin harvick, why does he care? he would rather push the 24 through. with 24 as the leader that puts him up abovethe cut lane. that puts the 20, 18, 19, 11 racing aroundthat bubble. >> the 3 of austin dillon being in the middleof the pack. he needs a good run. right now he's 21 back. he's got to find a way to the front.

>> he finished fifth in the may race. in this situation, chase elliott he's gotto be up front. when the checker flag flies he has to be ina must-win situation. >> 24 car doing the same as, 2 side draftingeach other. that doesn't speed your car up it slows downthe other cars. two aggressive moves by drivers in the frontrow. >> this is a freight train rocketing downthe tracks, and every now and then the cars of that freight train change positions. >> watching that battle between brad keselowskiand chase elliott reminds me of a conversation

i had with elliott. he had a conversation about theed a vies hisfather gave him. he said the biggest thing his father taughthim was how to use the side draft. we saw the side draft being implemented. >> we clearly have seen the strategy frombrad keselowski, keep the car outfront all day long. that little bit of debris on the front ofthe grill. not too concerned about it right now. trying to keep that lead from chase elliott.

>> chase elliott out front now, chase willgo on the defense. he's going to try to stay in front line thatmoves. >> watch this move by the 2 car of keselowski. this is the 24 back doing, he's able to clearthe 24 and get the lead back. that's side drafting. that's the way you do it. >>> what an incredible display of side drafting. chase elliott in front of the field at talladega. winning this race could change their yearand get things moving positively at roush-fenway. look for drivers like ricky stenhouse jr. to be exceptionally aggressive. >> matt kenseth, told him a moment ago, stepinterest. close that gap. you see the main draft and back there arethose gibbs cars trying to catch the main draft. just in case something happens on pit road. smart move?

you called it earlier. you said that's what the gibbs cars have todo. >> it's become more important. the group behind them has gotten more organized. single file in front of them. teen front pack no longer three wide, it'stwo wide. that means it's that much harder to pull up. you need to make a move now. >> have to get clean on and off pit road.

we've seen issues on pit stops before. do they take perhaps two tires and limit theirrisk. we saw martin truex jr. come to pit road and decide to take four tires,slow, he loses the draft and loses a lap right here. that's the risk for the gibbs strategy. they need to close that. >> the other thing this will teach them howfar they can get back and pull back up. if they start to pull back up and can't getthere they will get nervous quickly.

they will learn right now what that thresholdis. >> more on the 18. here's dave. >> interesting thing, the order they are runningin. right now kenseth then kyle busch and thencarl edwards. adam stevens crew chief for kyle busch saidour car is not best in that group. kyle will not be leader whether it's earlyor late in this race. >>> chase points, 19 points separating the20 all the way back to 24. only 19 points.

that's 19 positions. there's 40 cars out there on the track. >> as you sit up here, jeff you keep pointingout you're not sure how much help they have. the front pack is more organized. you have nerves. you're not out there. you know how easily you can lose the draft. not something you feel and all of a suddenit's gone snoofrpry driver tries a strategy, ride in the back and have success and everydriver has the strategy and got in a wreck.

the biggest fear is in trying to protect andtrying to play it safe. you make a mistake, you put yourself in jeopardywith a bad pit stop. that's the biggest fear. >> we heard the words get ready for a pitstop. how do you get ready? where do you position yourself to let anyoneknow i'm coming to pit road. >> put your handout the window. >> there's ricky stenhouse jr. waving hisleft hand. >> this is always an opportunity have a wreck.

we see a lot here. >> he'll have to have some friends come alongwith him and does. they want to make sure not slide their tires. big slide out of the number 3 of austin dillonon the right side. >> he blew his right front tire. >> looked like it was locked up from the timehe came off the racetrack until he got on pit road. >> he just road to his crew, he thinks hehas a flat. they have to change all four here and getaustin back out.

we talked about this earlier how the spotterwill help tell but the driver knows what's going on. he knew he blew a tire. >> martin truex jr. will try to take care of those tires. sunoco fuel as well. very happy with the handling. lost the front pack of the lead draft. all those cars leaving pit road.

first stall on pit road. already gone. no chassis changes. very happy with it. has a ton of speed. >> 24 able to stay behind him as they cameout. >> jack underneath the 22. that can be devastating for this team. >> interesting to see where this jack endsup.

quo have a caution. three joe gibbs cars have yet to pit. >> 22 needs that. that's what he want. best case scenario. he wants that jack to come out to force acaution. >> 4 has to stay behiernd him. you can't blends on the racetrack until youcome out of turn number two. trying to get rid of the jack.

going down the back stretch at 150 miles perhour. >> we talk about pit road mistakes. that's what we're talking about. >> once again 11 gets a speedsing penalty. denny hamlin too fast entering pit road. >> talked about pit road mistakes. we see two issues here. the 11 and 22 in the first-round of pit stops. >> this is just the first-round of pit stops.

40 laps into this 188 lap race. jack still underneath the 22. made it all the way around the racetrack withoutcoming undone. >> it's amazing that jack made it all theway to pit road. try to make a chassis adjustment for joeylogano as well. they do not do the chassis adjustment. >> edwards on pit road taking advantage here,four tire changes, fuel for edwards. >> matt kenseth coming down pit road. clean stop for these guys.

four tires. no changes to the chassis. they gained a little bit of ground not muchon that front pack for that joe gibbs racing group. >>> we see the 20 of matt kenseth. coming out. he rode behind the pack trying to stay outof trouble. see how much ground they gave up. >> where are his teammates that's the biggerquestion.

>> just a little unorganized. three of them pitted together. the 11 pitted on his own and ended up witha speeding penalty. first time by when the pack pitted the gibbscars did not and they had a big gap in front of them and ran two slow laps. this is the concern, the strategy seemed fineuntil green flag pit stops cycled the whole field around. >> already the ninth speeding penalty thatdenny hamlin has this year alone. the penalty for taking equipment out of yourbox with the 22 was served when he came back

to his box when they were able to take thejack out from underneath the 22. >> that could be a reason why they didn'tchange the tires. they just removed the jack. >> guys, i believe the 78 has lost an engine,martin truex, jr. said the engine blew up down the straightaway. he definitely left pit road last time. smoke in the cabin. had a very bad vibration. smoke had gone away.

vibration had not. just a moment ago going down the back stretchthe engine let go. obviously this will be a huge hit for theirchampionship hopes and likely take them out of it. >> devastating for martin truex, jr. coming into the chase. probably the favorite. one of the best on mile and a half tracks. listen.

>> already has it out of gear. >> stay down. >> second toyota engine failure we've seenin the chase. we saw the 11 car at charlotte, denny hamlinhaving engine trouble and now martin truex >> this is what we talked about, guys. this is the strategy of seeing,000 race unfolds. talk about the 78. unfortunate circumstances. but this affects how is austin dillon, joeylogano, denny hamlin going race.

here's a driver that was only 13 ahead. you would assume with any failure he willlose 13 points. that can affect their strategy. they are racing less chase cars for thoseeight spots. >> if something happens, people benefit fromit and some people are hurt by it. that saved denny hamlin, that kept denny hamlinfrom going a lap down. i believe it kept joey logano going a lapdown as well. >> i would expect all the leaders to stayon pit road. they were just there.

back half of the field may come to get fuel. gibbs cars have been riding around the back. 24th, 25th, 26th no reason to come back. >> steve, after you had all this just happenand a lot happened in a matter of five laps, if you're joe gibbs racing and saw the 20car get left behind you just saw two cars get penalized are you afraid to give up thattrack position. >> first thing i'll do is send someone tothe garage area to find out what happened to the 78. can we run cooler oil temperature.

remove tape. remember that's a tr engine. very few failures. at the restrictor-plate tracks normally allbuilt the same. i want to know what happened. anything i can do to prevent it from happening. >> have to chat with cole. he's running now. trying to get to his car to find out exactlywhat happened.

>> interesting race. a lot of guys doing different strategies. i like strategy to run upfront every lap totry lead every lap. that's what chase has to do. he has to win this race. other guys are laying back. how long will they lay back. >> you're putting yourself in chase's situationand what tony would do. are your saying i would be doing this.

>> i saw him this morning. he said i'll try lead every lap. i said that's the best thing you can do. don't go to the back. so much harder to get towards front. when you're three wide there's nowhere togo. so much harder as this race progresses tocome from rear. >> 144 to go. we have a little time to hang out.

>> up didn't bring any cookies for steve. >> a lot of mountain dew. >> we're looking forward to the green flag. a restart from talladega super speedway whenwe come back.turn into a five hour job. >>> already, we have seen chase problems. the round of 12, the jack underneath the 22. went all the way around track, couldn't shakt. speeding on pit road, 11 of denny hamlin. into the grass and now the 78 of martin truexjr.

let's hear from him. he's with marty. >> you are standing here to process what'sgone on. i heard you talk about a vibration, smokein the cabin. what happened? >> just developed a vibration and startedto lose a little bit of power. originally i thought it might have bean tirebecause it was shaking and it got worse and worse until it was time to pit. once i slowed down and hit pit road and feltthe vibration i knew we were in trouble.

not the way we wanted the day to go. tough way to go out. proud of the effort. proud of all the guys. engine has been great all year. every once in a while you have a failure. unfortunate with everything on the line. i don't know. it is what is it.

it's racing. it's part it. we'll move on. try to win the last five races or whateveris left and have a good end to our season. >> any concern for the other toyota cars? >> i don't think so. i guess you never know. but, you know, seems like, i think we're prettymuch running the same engines. they've been good.

very reliable. i'm sure it was just a part failure, mechanicalissue and just unfortunate. >> with the team so good, martin and the carso good how hard is it to walk away. >> won't be hard if we can win the next fiveraces. >> martin truex, jr. back here evaluating what's going on withthat engine. designee said it will be harder when theygo out for the last five races because of the fact because they feel they could be thechampions. >> we're jumping to conclusions.

why they are off the racetrack we've seenchaos here at talladega before. >> two by two once again, ricky stenhousejr. on the outside. brad keselowski on the inside. again start-finish line just past the apexof the tri-oval. getting up to speed. the 2 of brad keselowski quite a bit slowerof the 17 of ricky stenhouse jr. on that restart. >> ricky stenhouse jr., i thought he pulledout in front of the 2 car but kept that bottom

lane open. you got to be selfish. maybe he was trying to help paul menard. in this kind of racing somebody pushes toyou race you have to protect yourself. you can get that spot you have to take it. >> you have to be aggressive. brad is really smart. knows what he's doing. great shove from the 41 on the restart.

>> is that a possibility he thought he mighthave got too goofed restart and nascar called him on it? it was a situation he wasn't greedy enough. when you get thread and clear. >> to be successful here to be greedy, yougot to be selfish, willing to block. keselowski will block as if it's the lastlap not as if it's lap 48. every lap. river lap you have to drive that way. you have command of the field right here.

he'll get in front of each line. he has a great spotter on top of the box andthat guy will tell him what lane is coming. >> that's one of the thing you always didsuch a good job of. you were always very aggressive. you put your car in position -- don't do thatand you would do it and make it work. what i saw that's why you're so special. >> you have to be very greedy and very aggressive,side drafting aggressively every lap. you hate to do it. some of the competitors out there you raceagainst.

you have to. you have to stay up front all day long. >> how about manufacturers working together? is that something you look at right now inthe race and say all right when we get the 10 to go we'll forget. you have two boards upfront. >> not really. he's going to start hopping back and forthas you see and that's giving him enough of a shove to keep that lead.

very simple what he's doing. as long as nobody gets a real big run he shouldhave the lead here. but, you know, when you're in the back ofthe pack, three wide you're trying to find somewhere to go. you will do everything you can to get there. >> if you are chase elliott, he's moving laneto lane. he's got that middle lane and top lane thathe can pick from. he's trying to find the energy to come frombehind to clear the 2 car. >> you're trying to find that energy.

you don't want anybody on your quarter panelside drafting you. 17 will do the exact same thing there. >> they are in trouble. two drivers up there now. >> i'm letting you all go. i'll start with the pit stop. it seems like we've seen this before thatthe middle lane and the top lanes seem to stay more organized. bottom breaks up sooner on the straightawayeveryone moves to the top but there's speed

in the middle of the corner. seems the middle or top is the lane to bein. >> that bottom line more wheel in the cardown there. gets a little bit coming off the corners. you're getting side drafted on the right sideof the car all the time. you can't drive lower and get away from theseguys when you run in the middle of the high side. can you get away from them and actually improveyour position. if you're on the bottom, you're kind of atthe mercy of everybody on your outside.

>> you cannot go below that yellow the lineadvance your position. if you advance your position, it will be apenalty. that yellow line you almost have to look atas a wall. you can't go down there. it limits where the driver can go. >> we said side drafting a hundred times inthe last five minutes. when did this phenomenon start? >> seems like the last few years everybodyunderstands it better. >> it's been around for decades.

you can see it in a lot of old races and oldfootage. i don't know whether they knew what was happeningwhen they were side drafting each other but i'll have to be admitting my father was oneof the guys starting to understand it and using it and teaching the rest of the fieldas to how to use it as a tool and now used to be an advantage that very few of us had. now everyone in the field knows exactly whatkit do and how to use it. i think these newer cars are more sensitiveto it. big square cars with long quarter panels aremore sensitive. >> dmaktsly right.

when you're on the inside you can get withinfour or five inches of the carton outside and hold him at bay. even without any help fighting that side draft. and you're waiting, looking in the mirrorfor help to come you can sit there and hold that guy. they can side draft him all day long. >> so you're up in the booth and have a smileon your face but we know you much rather be down there on track. >> that's right.

i was on the pit box and that's when it hitme. i want to be out there doing what these guysare doing. i want to be making these choices they aremaking trying to improve my position. but such an exciting perspective to be ableto watch it here. but there's nothing like being in the car. >> making those decisions. >> riding along right now with denny hamlinin the 11 car. he got saved by that caution. that caution kept him from going a lap down.

had this race gone another 15 laps or so hewould have found himself a lap down. now he's worked himself back up to the 10thspot. he's back in the middle of the pack whereit's crazy and wild. slowly back in the pack. >> junior you mentioned your dad one of thebest to be able to drive at restrictor-plate racetracks. keselowski is trying to do what the intimidatorhas been able to do. three restrictor-plate wins. >> absolutely. you're in the lead. all you need do is be in front of the line,has the momentum to give the push. you see brad in front of the 41 car. the car closest him to. brad is looking in the mirror down the backstraightaway. he's looking in that mirror just about 95%of the lap. there's nothing to look out in front of thecar. he's looking in the mirror seeing what linesare coming.

his spotter is telling him this shrine forming,that line is forming. the 41 is coming. the 16 right here. the 24 will be defending. so he's listening to that from his spotterand jump in front of that guy. he's not blocking because he's making themove early enough. he's just putting himself right in front ofthe car that's got the momentum. >>> you use the word simple. doing it at 190 plus miles per hour.

a guy that's pretty close to the front the24 of chase elliott. >> he can definitely see the front. he's been the leader for five laps. the bottom line going by chase elliott. but elliott has shown an uncanny knack fordriving this racetrack. he said some of that is because he's gottena lot of help from his teammates, veterans like jimmie johnson and kasey kahne and mentioneda guy whose not in the race car today, dale earnhardt jr. he said you helped him a lot.

>> i spoke to him this morning. he asked me if i had any advice. i said the situation you're in you can gofor broke. the best success i had is when i race everylap to lead it. any time i went to the back and tried to becalm i could never find a way to get back through the pack. once it gets down to 50, 30, to go it's threewide. you won't make this run and get through thefield to get to lead the. everybody is trying to go the lead at thatpoint.

so the best situation to be is in the topthree or leading the race all day. >> we saw that the stats there are almost200 miles per hour. here comes greg biffle to take the lead away. >> that 2 car got to his right rear quarterpanel. he's backing up to the 1, brad easily clearshim and pull the 24 through as well. 16 car had a chance. had a big run but that big run wasn't beinghelped by jamie mcmurray. jamie mcmurray was not close him to. so he had no drafting help.

that side draft pulled him out big time becausenobody was helping him from behind. >> can chase stay in front of either line? >> he'll do that for a limited time beforeone of the lines does get up beside him. he's probably -- he doesn't have a run tochallenge brad. so he's going to get in front of the linesthat are moving behind him. >> let's take a minute and explain to thefans this side drafting. we'll go into the wind tunnel. we have a car in the wind tunnel. you see the car going from front to back.

boom he moves away from him to get away fromthat side draft. doesn't slow the 2 car. clears the 78. immediately pulls in front of him. >> same thing to 24. >> you can do it on the left or right. it works the same. get your fender right on there. get away from him as quickly as you can.

>> speak of getting away the 24 out in front. he must have listened to you. he's out in front now. he brought the 16 along with him. we'll see how long the 24 can do while the16 can get by him. the 16 and 24 were running side-by-side. way up the racetrack goes greg biffle. >> to get in front of the 24. that was the car he wanted to be in frontof even though the 2 is coming as well.

he thought the outside line with energy fromthe outswould be the best. >> how important is the timing to pull away. is it obvious you've done your work? >> i look at the air coming off the frontof the car and it's coming off the car. very dense coming off the head lights of thatcar you're trying to side draft. you don't want to be beside that guy. you run into that dense air coming off thenose of the lead car. you have to jump that. looks like water speed.

and not allow him -- you're also getting awayfrom him so he cannot sort of side draft you and defend that position. so you're both sort of bouncing back and forth. that's why the outside is so much easier todo your side drafting because you that have guy on the bottom. just like the 16 did to take the lead. >> everybody will be listening to this. >> i'm telling you from what i've seen theseguys have got it all figured it out. >> they will spend most of their time on thelake water skiing.

>> sounds like fun. we need to go water skiing to learn how todraft. how about log. back in this group back in front of the groupafter what happened earlier. ing that's the one from the 21 team of ryanblaney, bringing that down to be the new jack for joey logano's team. what happened on the stop is when they putjack in they went too far, went behind that plate and that's where the post on the cargot stuck. the crew chief side skirt on the car was bentin.

they fixed that. jack spot of fine. joey logano on the lead lap after carryinga jack the entire way around talladega. >> greg biffle out in front. the best finish he's ever had at taught second. he did that once back in 2014. but now he has become the leader and tryingto take everyone up the racetrack. >> he's looked fast all weekend. he was fastest in practice.

when i talked to his crew chief he gave creditto long time crew chief turned head of the restrictor-plate racing at roush-fenway. he said he does such an incredible job preparingthese speedway cars. they've not had the season they hoped for. i asked him what a win or a good finish woulddo here today and he said it would be huge for the organization as a whole. this is a company and a team hoping to geta little bit of momentum, a little bit of a morale boost headed through the rest ofthis season into the offseason to make things a little bit easier over to winter.

this is spotter coverage brought to you byliberty mutual insurance. take a look at the spotters up on-the-spottersstand, the perspective that they have on this massive size racetrack. >> massive is the point. look at the view. look how far away the cars are down in threeand four. like little dots on the racetrack. that's how far they are. these spotters are trying to clear these driversletting them know where the runs are coming

from. they use these tools, these special binoculars. you don't fopt cuss too much. they put their radio button in binoculars. >>> you hear information being given to keselowskiand calling the drivers of the cars and that's from a long way away. greg biffle driving to the bottom. he has debris on the front of his car. right on his grill.

i'm sure he's concerned about that. >> the 16 is keeping an eye on that. keeping an eye on his temperature. saying it's 250 degrees now and you saw thatmove he made, obviously with a car in front no one to run up on him and switch the airto get that piece of debris off. keeping a close eye on 16. designee has a decision to make. he knows how hot it can be before the engineis damage. he may have to pull out of line to get behindsomeone.

there's no one to get behind. if he pulls out of line he's going all theway to the back. he won't find a hole. he has a tough decision to make. there's a number. every driver knows the number. when you get to that number you have to dowhat you have to do. >> this was something that greg biffle wasable to accomplish? he's migrated the entire pack up to the wallsingle file.

>> this is a phenomenon that a lot of folksstill don't really understand why this works and how this works. looking at the 24 trying to make a pass maybefor the lead. basically, when everybody is side-by-sideon the bottom, three wide, what have you, everybody but the leader is out of gas. all trying to draft. when be everybody is up on this high grooveeverybody is wide-open. when we all get up there and you'll see alittle bit more gap, spaces between the characters everybody is wide-open.

this sas fast as these cars will go all daylong. you don't create runs. it doesn't create runs for anyone in the fieldas you see down the back straightaway, nobody is creating a run. so it's a safe place to be, especially ifyou're in the top, you know, top eight or top ten. brad keselowski getting antsy. the key is for keselowski he'll gain two orthree spots but nobody will go with him. if nobody goes with him what does doe if hedoes not find a hole to get into.

that move will shove him to the back. here's trick. when he makes his move, all right, so everybodyis running about half a car length to a car length apart. when he pulls out he needs to side draft thecar he's pulling out in front and pass one car at a time. his side draft will back up that car, createenough to -- >> he has a hole. right now the hole of the 48.

it worked out. had it not he would go all the way to theback. >> great job. we may be watching one of the new greats,the next great in plate racing. brad has a tremendous record. here he goes again. said drafts the 17. jimmie may come with him. he's taking a gamble he'll have a gap to getinto.

i would have side draft the 17 and then justpulled in front of the 17 because that would created enough of a hole. >> 41 of busch, he's thinking about going. 24 maybe. >> the 24 just stopped the 2s run. >> needed to. indecision behind the 2 was the top lane. now they got organized. now the 2 is the odd man out.

everybody is nose to tail. 48 came down. 21 came down. now basically who is willing to switch lanes. who is willing to risk that and gamble. right here pull away as he gets in the corner. he turns in the corner, go to the bottom ofthe racetrack. all the way. make it as short as he can right there onthe bottom of the racetrack try to get a short

distance around the corner. you can't make these passes one car at a time. it's thooshd that disciplined. you get such a great run. >> the 48 took the spot. >> the 48 of jimmie johnson. oh, golly. >> now that's as good a side draft as youcan make. he could have stepped right up in front ofthe 17.

>> want to liptsen into spotter communication. let's see what joey has to say to brad keselowski. >> middle lane dragging your right corner. hard right, hard right, hard right. right corner. blaney behind you. clear 17. blaney and joey in your mirror. do not get stuck up top.

copy. clear. don't get stuck up top. be on the bottom here pretty soon. bottom is clear. whatever you need bottom is clear. you're ahead by two. right corner on top. clear high if you need it.

he knows they need help on the bottom. but it's difficult to get to that bottom lane. >> nobody wants to go down there, though. right now we completed 107 of the 188 lapsscheduled. the last time everyone was on pit road aroundlap 80 or 81 or 82, so you've gone about 27 laps. and that's a little over half of a fuel run. so now once again everyone jockeying for positionor get in position where they can feel comfortable before they have to figure out where do ineed to be for the next pit stop.

on the line. i don't know. it is what is it.it's racing. it's part it. we'll move on. >> any concern for the other toyota cars?>> i don't think so. i guess you never know. but, you know, seems like, i think we're prettymuch running the same engines. they've been good. very reliable. i'm sure it was justa part failure, mechanical issue and just unfortunate.>> with the team so good, martin and the car so good how hard is it to walk away.>> won't be hard if we can win the next five races. >> martin truex, jr. back here evaluatingwhat's going on with that engine. designee said it will be harder when they go out forthe last five races because of the fact because

they feel they could be the champions.>> we're jumping to conclusions. why they are off the racetrack we've seen chaos hereat talladega before. >> two by two once again, ricky stenhousejr. on the outside. brad keselowski on the inside. again start-finish line just pastthe apex of the tri-oval. getting up to speed. the 2 of brad keselowski quite a bit slowerof the 17 of ricky stenhouse jr. on that restart. lane open. you got to be selfish. maybe hewas trying to help paul menard. in this kind of racing somebody pushes to you race youhave to protect yourself. you can get that spot you have to take it.>> you have to be aggressive. brad is really smart. knows what he's doing. great shovefrom the 41 on the restart.

him on it?>> i don't think so. it was a situation he wasn't greedy enough. when you get threadand clear. >> to be successful here to be greedy, yougot to be selfish, willing to block. keselowski will block as if it's the last lap not asif it's lap 48. every lap. river lap you have to drive that way. you have command of thefield right here. he'll get in front of each line. he has a great spotter on top of thebox and that guy will tell him what lane is coming.>> that's one of the thing you always did such a good job of. you were always very aggressive.you put your car in position -- don't do that and you would do it and make it work. whati saw that's why you're so special.

>> you have to be very greedy and very aggressive,side drafting aggressively every lap. you hate to do it. some of the competitors outthere you race against. you have to. you have to stay up front all day long.>> how about manufacturers working together? 10 to go we'll forget. you have two boardsupfront. >> not really. he's going to start hoppingback and forth as you see and that's giving him enough of a shove to keep that lead. verysimple what he's doing. as long as nobody gets a real big run he should have the leadhere. but, you know, when you're in the back of the pack, three wide you're trying to findsomewhere to go. you will do everything you can to get there.>> if you are chase elliott, he's moving lane

to lane. he's got that middle lane and toplane that he can pick from. he's trying to find the energy to come from behind to clearthe 2 car. >> you're trying to find that energy. youdon't want anybody on your quarter panel side drafting you. 17 will do the exact same thingthere. >> they are in trouble. two drivers up therenow. >> i'm letting you all go. i'll start withthe pit stop. it seems like we've seen this before that the middle lane and the top lanesseem to stay more organized. bottom breaks up sooner on the straightaway everyone movesto the top but there's speed in the middle of the corner. seems the middle or top isthe lane to be in.

>> that bottom line more wheel in the cardown there. gets a little bit coming off the corners. you're getting side drafted on theright side of the car all the time. you can't drive lower and get away from these guys whenyou run in the middle of the high side. can you get away from them and actually improveyour position. if you're on the bottom, you're kind of at the mercy of everybody on youroutside. if you advance your position, it will be apenalty. that yellow line you almost have to look at as a wall. you can't go down there.it limits where the driver can go. >> we said side drafting a hundred times inthe last five minutes. when did this phenomenon start?>> seems like the last few years everybody

understands it better.>> it's been around for decades. you can see it in a lot of old races and old footage.i don't know whether they knew what was happening when they were side drafting each other buti'll have to be admitting my father was one of the guys starting to understand it andusing it and teaching the rest of the field as to how to use it as a tool and now usedto be an advantage that very few of us had. now everyone in the field knows exactly whatkit do and how to use it. i think these newer cars are more sensitive to it. big squarecars with long quarter panels are more sensitive. >> dmaktsly right. when you're on the insideyou can get within four or five inches of the carton outside and hold him at bay. evenwithout any help fighting that side draft.

lines are coming. his spotter is telling himthis shrine forming, that line is forming. the 41 is coming. the 16 right here. the 24will be defending. so he's listening to that from his spotter and jump in front of thatguy. he's not blocking because he's making the move early enough. he's just putting himselfright in front of the car that's got the momentum. >>> you use the word simple. doing it at 190plus miles per hour. a guy that's pretty close to the front the 24 of chase elliott.>> he can definitely see the front. he's been the leader for five laps. the bottom linegoing by chase elliott. but elliott has shown an uncanny knack for driving this racetrack.he said some of that is because he's gotten a lot of help from his teammates, veteranslike jimmie johnson and kasey kahne and mentioned

a guy whose not in the race car today, daleearnhardt jr. he said you helped him a lot. >> i spoke to him this morning. he asked meif i had any advice. i said the situation you're in you can go for broke. the best successi had is when i race every lap to lead it. through the pack. once it gets down to 50,30, to go it's three wide. you won't make this run and get through the field to getto lead the. everybody is trying to go the lead at that point. so the best situationto be is in the top three or leading the race all day.>> we saw that the stats there are almost 200 miles per hour. here comes greg biffleto take the lead away. >> that 2 car got to his right rear quarterpanel. he's backing up to the 1, brad easily

clears him and pull the 24 through as well.16 car had a chance. had a big run but that big run wasn't being helped by jamie mcmurray. jamie mcmurray was not close him to. so hehad no drafting help. that side draft pulled him out big time because nobody was helpinghim from behind. >> can chase stay in front of either line?>> he'll do that for a limited time before one of the lines does get up beside him. he'sprobably -- he doesn't have a run to challenge brad. so he's going to get in front of thelines that are moving behind him. >> let's take a minute and explain to thefans this side drafting. we'll go into the wind tunnel. we have a car in the wind tunnel.you see the car going from front to back.

that's what happened when the car is on theracetrack. you see what that does. that smoke is like taxpayer. drives the air up over onthe spoiler of that leading car which aedes a ton of drag and pulls that car back.>> the inside car is the one that slows down. it doesn't speed up the white car. makes ittook like the white car is passing. it slows the 78 car up. boom he moves away from himto get away from that side draft. doesn't slow the 2 car. clears the 78. immediatelypulls in front of him. >> same thing to 24.>> you can do it on the left or right. it works the same. get your fender right on there.get away from him as quickly as you can. >> speak of getting away the 24 out in front.he must have listened to you. he's out in

front now. he brought the 16 along with him.we'll see how long the 24 can do while the 16 can get by him. the 16 and 24 were runningside-by-side. way up the racetrack goes greg biffle.>> to get in front of the 24. that was the car he wanted to be in front of even thoughthe 2 is coming as well. he thought the outside line with energy from the outswould be thebest. >> how important is the timing to pull away.is it obvious you've done your work? >> i look at the air coming off the frontof the car and it's coming off the car. very dense coming off the head lights of that caryou're trying to side draft. you don't want to be beside that guy. you run into that denseair coming off the nose of the lead car. you

have to jump that. looks like water speed.and not allow him -- you're also getting away from him so he cannot sort of side draft youand defend that position. so you're both sort of bouncing back and forth. that's why theoutside is so much easier to do your side drafting because you that have guy on thebottom. just like the 16 did to take the lead. >> everybody will be listening to this.>> i'm telling you from what i've seen these guys have got it all figured it out.>> they will spend most of their time on the lake water skiing.>> sounds like fun. we need to go water skiing to learn how to draft. how about log. backin this group back in front of the group after what happened earlier. ing that's the onefrom the 21 team of ryan blaney, bringing

how hot it can be before the engine is damage.he may have to pull out of line to get behind someone. there's no one to get behind. ifhe pulls out of line he's going all the way to the back. he won't find a hole. he hasa tough decision to make. there's a number. every driver knows the number. when you getto that number you have to do what you have to do.>> this was something that greg biffle was able to accomplish? he's migrated the entirepack up to the wall single file. and how this works. looking at the 24 tryingto make a pass maybe for the lead. basically, when everybody is side-by-side on the bottom,three wide, what have you, everybody but the leader is out of gas. all trying to draft.when be everybody is up on this high groove

everybody is wide-open. when we all get upthere and you'll see a little bit more gap, spaces between the characters everybody iswide-open. this sas fast as these cars will go all day long. you don't create runs. itdoesn't create runs for anyone in the field as you see down the back straightaway, nobodyis creating a run. so it's a safe place to be, especially if you're in the top, you know,top eight or top ten. brad keselowski getting antsy. the key is for keselowski he'll gaintwo or three spots but nobody will go with him. if nobody goes with him what does doeif he does not find a hole to get into. that move will shove him to the back. here'strick. when he makes his move, all right, so everybody is running about half a car lengthto a car length apart. when he pulls out he

needs to side draft the car he's pulling outin front and pass one car at a time. his side draft will back up that car, create enoughto -- >> he has a hole. right now the hole of the48. it worked out. had it not he would go all the way to the back.>> great job. we may be watching one of the new greats, the next great in plate racing.brad has a tremendous record. here he goes again. said drafts the 17. jimmie may comewith him. he's taking a gamble he'll have a gap to get into. i would have side draftthe 17 and then just pulled in front of the 17 because that would created enough of ahole. >> 41 of busch, he's thinking about going.24 maybe.

what was that like?>> it was tough. i knew i had a tough road ahead of me because i'm watching how muchi beat the 41. unbelievable. this is really the first true good fortune i've had in my11 year career. i knew it was going to be a tough day fighting with teammates. otherteammates from other teams. and, you know, i thought this was the best case scenariofor us is to go out here and finish in the top five and hope to chips fall in a goodway for us and they did. >> maybe this is a new way to chase for dennyhamlin. >> finish he was talking about that he waswatching just how close it was. he was behind the 41 as it came out of the tri-oval. hehad to surge ahead and ended up being that

we're all equal. pretty big day for the 22team to keep moving on. our cars are good. we have speed. we've been executing reallygood besides charlotte this round. we've been able to come back with a crashin charlotte, that feels good. >> how about the last two restarts. so youtake the outside on one, the inside on the last one. were you just showing off or wasthere a plan there? >> okay. no, there was a plan behind that.i thought the restart before i had a good pusher. i was confused the last one. i havekevin who had a lot of experience and pushed me good and was very disciplined. maybe i'lltake him. then i saw the top. i don't know. what do i do? i asked my crew chief, todd.what do i do?

>> tell me how to drive.>> what do i do? he said stick with harvick. i said okay. that was a big deal. he was goingto push me ahead really well. once i was clear in three and four, i got the momentum of thetop side off of turn two. that was key. if i wasn't able to take the lead there, i don'tbelieve i would have won the race. that was a key moment.>> you spoke about coming into this race this year with some adversity. all of a suddenwe have the jack hung up under the car. talk us through you and your conversation withtodd gordon. it happened early in the race so there was recovery time. talk us throughhow you guys kept your composure. >> we stayed calm. it's a long race. thatwas our first pit stop. i've been in this

race before, you knock off fenders and finishin the top five. things can happen. this is the first time i've seen it here. i didn'teven know i had the jack under the car. i looked to the left and it was to my head,the jack handle. i couldn't shake it. have to get a new jack for martinsville, i think.>> the jack. >> i think that is garbage.>> you've enjoyed this long enough. you're in the round of 8. talk about the next threetracks, how different this is going to be with the three different types of racetracksand how you see your team. >> we have some good racetracks. martinsvilleis good for us. we've found something that's made us more competitive at that racetrack.texas is good for us. phoenix, we finished

third there last year. we've run fairly consistent.not quite a winning car team but consistent. have to do a little bit more. if we can getthrough the first couple of races and build a cushion, if we can win like today, thatwould be a lot better than anything. we're going to try to do that. winning at martinsvillehas a huge advantage. you know you're not going to finish worse than fourth. all youdo is focus in on miami. that's all you work on.>> as we move into this round, a lot of fast cars.
