mastectomy bras, they'refashionable and figure flattering for breast cancersurvivors. also when it comes toproper nutrition for those battling cancer there aredefinitely foods that should and shouldn't be on your list. plus the benefits of drinkingwater. it's a healthy reminderfor all of us. the balancing actstarts right now. (music.)

for over 20 years, marty adrian has been taking care of breastcancer survivors, she's been helping women cope with thephysical and emotional scars that come along with theunexpected challenges they face, fitting them with bras andteaching others to do the same, proving you can still befeminine and feel just as beautiful on the outside as youdo on the inside. and joining metoday, our very special guest marty adrian, who's acertified and professional bra

fitter from jodee, a companyspecializing in post mastectomy bras that are both fashionableand functional. good morning. hi, olga it's so nice to have uson today. and it's a pleasure tohave you. you know, it's, it'sreally a truly emotional subject. it is. breast cancer.

and i know you've made such adifference and you've inspired women along the way and godbless you for that. and tell mehow you've been helping women find that perfect bra aftersurgery, because that's not easy to do. it isn't. and everyonehas a different expectation, and we, with our wide variety ofbras can make that a custom fit for every person that we meet.

which is great. and marty, whatinspired you to do this? my bestfriend at 32 was diagnosed with so young. she, wewent in and found a department store and the fitter was a younggirl that treated her like she had leprosy and when she cameout we were both balling and she said if that's what it's goingto be like, i'm not going to use anything.

and i thought, we needto make a difference. and you'vebeen doing that, and you've been doing it for almost 20 years ihave more than 20 years i should say. talk to me about, all thewomen you've met, i mean there's just so many stories you haveand the challenges they have faced along the way. these womenfirst and foremost are worried about if they are even going tosurvive.

of course. and thechildren, the families. exactly. which the ripple effect withtheir family and their husbands and all the other things, it'sjust astronomical. on top ofthat but not only, there's the physical differences too, youcan have shoulders that are out of kilter, and once you putsomebody in the proper bra and prosthesis, everything gets backinto place.

now jodee's been inbusiness for over 45 years, you've worked with jodee formore than 20, tell me what makes them so special marty. first andforemost, we are a family. wewant to make sure that what the end of the day, we are takingcare of those ladies that are in such need of getting their liferestored. so our certifiedfitters are talking to these ladies over the phone, gettingthem fit over the phone, but

even more than that. we are allabout quality. we invented thepermaform bra, which looks like a regular bra, however, it has abreast form that has built, been built into it. it's seamless,it's quite a bit lighter bit than what a silicone form is,restores the body balance, it is a weighted form so it fitsnicely, looks and feels great and the lady just puts it on,and away she goes.

she never hasto worry about where that foarm is. so that's one of the things,we also have a balance fit cushion for more severesurgeries, to help fill out areas, but it does even morethan, it will help restore the body balance of the bra so itdoesn't twist, it helps keep tissues inside the bra, insteadof letting it creep out over the top and it's just a greatproduct for those people that need a little extra, more of apersonalized fit.

we have a lotof variety with our forms, this is a slightly silicone form andthen we also have one that is, we call our sports form that'sused if you're golfing or swimming, so we have literally,so many options. and the stylesare beautiful, i wanna show my viewers yes! in fact, youbrought me 4 beautiful ones, let's walk over there certainly. and take them one by one.

olgalet me show you some of our great bra styles that we have. this is our camisole bra, it'sgot lace up high, so any kind of surgical things that are goingon, covers it up, fits very, very well, it's a great bra. this is our bra that wears wellunder t-shirts, sweaters, uh it's got a molded cup so it'svery forgiving and it's fit. it's got nice wide paddedshoulder straps, people love that.

looks very comfortable. itis very comfortable on, and still very, very stylish. thenext bra we're going to show you has, our super strap, this issomething that jodee invented. why are they so thick? wellbecause if you're heavy breasted, it helps to dispersethat weight. i see.

off of thechest wall and so it's a much more comfortable bra for thoseladies that are very heavy breasted. so that can reallymake a difference for them. yes. and with a lot of our brastyles, we'll have ones that hook in the back, this onehappens to be available in a front hook as well as a backhook. so it, if you need thatback hook for adjustment but the

easy of getting in and out ofit, with a font hook. and marty, what's the perfect fit? you wantthe shoulders close to the neck line so they don't fall off theshoulders, you want it to be snug, but not too snug, you wantthe cup to be correct in that it's not tissue spilling outwhich would mean the cup was too little, or a lot of puckeringwhich would mean the cup is too big. and you want to have itpretty much, streamlined right

were their breast bone is, whenyou get all of those things put together, then you know thatyou've got the correct size. andthe lady is going to be very, very happy with this fit. and iam happy with this one, look at this color! this is a sapphireblue bra. beautiful! brand newaddition to our line, and we're

so proud of this bra, it isgorgeous, it does not in any way look like a surgical mastectomybra at all. gorgeous bra! fit'svery, very well. and marty, acouple questions. what ifsomeone finds something that they like, but it doesn't, youdon't have their size? right! wewill do a customized bra for

them. we will customize that brato fit them exactly what their needs are. so, we pretty muchnow can fit anybody that's walking around, which is afabulous feel. and insurancecovers some of these? medicarecovers them uh has their different guidelines, theprivate insurances because there's so many varieties, theywill also cover them.

but itdepends upon which insurance they have. but yes, mostinsurance will cover it. andwhere can ladies find these? well certainly we do a fabulousjob over the phone, fitting these ladies. but if somebodywants a more personalized fit. get a hold of our 800 number, and we can direct them towards a store that sells our product.

you know you've inspired so manywomen that needed that inspiration along with thecompany as well. really making adifference. well i can tell you,20 years ago, i would have never thought that this is where i wasgoing to end up, but fate has different things for differentpeople and you can make a difference in some, in a woman'slife when she's at her lowest point. that's right.

thank youso much. thank you. appreciateyour time. focus on breast cancerawareness. and did you know that about 1 in 8 women in the unitedstate will develop invasive breast cancer over the course ofher lifetime and more than half of these women amber who areover 40 will undergo a mastectomy?it's nuts to think about. today we're featuringstylish and contemporary

these bras, where to find them, how to get fitted, to make that phone call just go to thewebsite jodee dot com that's jodee dot com, j o d e e or toto our website, the balancing act dot com (music.)up next, here's a sparkling idea drinkmore water! why h20 does more than just hydrate us!cheers!(music.) bottled water consumptionhas grown more than a 120 percent in the past15 years and it's predicted that this beverage will outsell sodaby 2017. we all know that water

is good for us. no brainer!keeps us hydrated, but what about the unexpected healthbenefits water has to offer. well here to talk about this isdoctor diana galish frasier from nature's healthiestcertification and nutritionist patty murphy from sanavi, goodmorning! good morning! thanks for being here! thanks forhaving us! alright so let's talk about unexpected benefits.patty, number 1. oh olga let's start with the skin. huge! oh itis huge, because the skin is actually our largest organ andit's 64 percent water, so it's

so important to be hydratedbecause those fine lines and wrinkles are really going toshow up if we're not fully hydrated every day. that's whywe wrote there, makes our skin look younger! alright, doctorwater gives us energy. i mean we all know that! but give me alittle more after that. well, 60 percent of our bodies are waterand 85 percent of our brains are water, i bet you didn't knowthat. no, i did not. our bodies function because of our brains, and so when we stay hydrated, what that will do is have us beable to think. be able to

concentrate and focus andabsolutely give our bodies more energy to function the way thatit's designed. alright, number 3, let's look at it right now, real quick. appetite suppressant. oh absolutely. itrevs up our metabolism, and if we're drinking water, we'restaying hydrated, and a lot of people mistake hunger cues forwhen they are actually thirsty. so have that glass of waterbefore meals, it will help fill up your stomach and make youfeel more satiated. it will rev up your metabolism. theyactually found that people who

drank more water, actually hadas much as a 30 percent greater metabolism. and to put that interms of weight loss, if you drank 1.5 liters extra a day foran entire year. that's 5 pounds of weight loss, just from water.just from water alone. just from water. i drink about 80 to 100ounces of water a day, which explains probably my energy.yes. right? okay! yes, absolutely. i just naturallydrink water. but a lot of people just have trouble remembering.so are there any tricks doctor? well you know you can set appson your phone, you can have

alarms on your phone, you canhave pretty bottles of water. that helps! you can have yourown special bottle of water to make you remember, oh my gosh, this body is important to hydrate. and flavored water isreally good, it gives it a little zing. and patty i knowyou brought me some here, so let's talk about this. wellthese are our sanavi sparking spring waters, they're allorganic. hmmm. and no artificial anything in them. this is good, this has lime in it! oh yes, lime is one of our favoriteflavors, we also have orange

mango and lemon and coconut isone of everybody's favorites and strawberry and blueberry. theflavors are just wonderful, we really took a lot of time, selecting very specific organically grown fruit to beused, the natural oils actually go into this in very minuteamounts. but in doing that, we were able to not add anysweeteners, no additives, and it's made with 100 percentnatural spring water that has a wonderful blend of minerals andelectrolytes that really help balance our bodies and thathelps with hydration, it helps

with energy, but there's nothingelse in it. and no calories. and no calories as well which isvery important. non gmo, the bottle is bpa free, so it hitsall those points. you know, so many people are asking aboutwhat our healthy beverage options because a lot of peopleare trying to get off the sugar, sweetened sodas, andartificially sweetened sodas. hmmm. and this is a greatalternative, we want people to look at the ingredients on theirproducts because that's where you're going to find out what'sin it. if it's a long list of

chemicals stay away from it.absolutely. so look for simple, naturally based things and wewere so excited to actually be granted nature's healthiestcertification because we took such care in the ingredients ofour products. and what is that exactly, doctor? well nature'shealthiest certified is a certification process that'sbeen granted us by the u.s. patton and trademark office. soin order to be nature's healthiest certified, there haveto be no artificial ingredients, non gmo, just a list ofstringent, nutritious advice.

they have to go through a panelof health care professionals have come up with parametersthat has products either be nature's healthiest certified ornot. now before we go, i know october is breast cancerawareness month. very important month for all of us. and, i'mactually wearing pink, did you see that? absolutely. let's talkquickly about how, you know, water, hydration relates tocancer. well you know hydration is so important for everybody'ssystem, and we've actually found through research that wasrecently published in the

journal of clinical oncologythat showed that the people that drank the most water, wereactually less likely, to develop both colon and bladder cancer,as well as breast cancer. interesting. so, so importantfor those body systems. right, and good nutrition and healthywellness lifestyle choices is, there the best steps toprevention. and so we're all about teaching people that itmakes so much more sense to take care of yourself and to practiceproactive prevention then to wait until you're sick. so yeswater is so important both with

people who are already goingdown that path and for people who want to not have to go downthat path. important information. very important!ladies thank you so much. this one i just tried is? strawberry?uhhh you guys have three flavors for me! thank you so much! okaymy favorite for now is the mango, i'm hispanic, mangos aremy favorite. absolutely. thank you ladies very much, iappreciate you time. thank you! and if you'd like moreinformation about where you can find this fabulous water go todrink sanavi dot com or you can

also go to our website thebalancing act dot com (music.) up next when it comes tohelping defend against cancer foods that are rich inantioxidants are just what the doctor ordered. stay with us.(music.) an estimated one out of every threecancer deaths in the united states is linked to excess bodyweight, poor nutrition and or physical inactivity, accordingto the american cancer society. as olga learned when she visiteda local hospital in south florida and spoke with one ofits chefs. (music.) look at that

ginger! fresh ginger! we are atzest restaurant in miami florida and i'm with celebrity chefcindy hutson. she's making such a special soup for us thismorning. good morning! hi olga, good morning! tell me whatyou're making. well i'm making a west indian pumpkinbisque hmmm mmmmm! and it's beautiful. look at the vibrantcolors. and tell me why you chose the ingredients and startshowing me what you're going to put in. well, we'rechoosing bright, bright ingredients that have sweetnessto them. we want bright colors,

the beta-carotene and all thewonderful things that go into cancer fighting ingredients.which is important and speaking of cancer fighting ingredientsand cancer this is obviously october, breast cancer awarenessmonth yes it is! a very special month where everybody comestogether to do their part. and you're really doing your partcindy. you are the ambassador, culinary ambassador to miamicancer institute, very special for you isn't it? i amhonored, i just feel elated about the whole thing. my momwent through cancer, so it's

close to my heart. ohhh. mymom's a survivor, 12 years now. 12 years in remission, lovethat! alright, let's keep on going here. okay, so when i'mmaking this i like to build the flavors slowly, so i alreadycaramelized the onions that brings out the natural sugars.i'm using carrots because carrots tend to be a littlesweeter than this west indian pumpkin or calabaza. if youlayer your flavors, as you're building the recipe naturalsweetness comes. then we add this? that goes once it's arolling boil. we put that in

there and that's coconut milk.oohh love that. now you can buy lovely coconut milk in a can, ours is always fresh grated. and then you cook it for how long?it'll take you maybe 10, 15 minutes. i know you have alittle bit here for me, i'm going to try it. try it! becausei know you're also getting a salad ready for me? i am! let metry this real quick. oh wow that's good! you can serve itcold or you can serve it hot. oh i like it both ways! alright, ready for the salad? i sure am! let's do it. okay. alrightcindy, from soup to salad, more

specifically a kale crunchsalad? luscious, crunchy, deliciousness. hmmm let'sdo it! we're going to start with some roasted garlic andshallots, the reason we're going to do that is because youknow garlic can be harsh, as well as shallots, whole grainmustard. okay. and when you can cancer, the smells get to youand sometimes the harshness so we want it to taste nutty andmild. okay that makes sense. we have the mustard, the wholegrain mustard, i like it with the seeds in there. we haveturmeric, which is

anti-inflammatory. good stuff.all these great ingredients. color. again that vibrant colorand flavor. we have over here, we don't want to use sugar, soi'm going to use non-sweetened apricot jam. then here we gowith the yogurt, a superfood. it's a greek yogurt, it hasall those nice probiotics and things in your stomach. it'slike the number one isn't it? yes it is! pomegranate juice andnow i'm going to turn this blender on. there you go. ohhthat is looking really nice. the pomegranate will add tartnessand it's another super food.

and what's that in there? thisis apple cider vinegar, we don't want to overwhelm ourpatients with that so we're going to put that alongside andhere we have a blend of avocado oil. look at the color. that isbeautiful. hmmm it is gorgeous and it tastes better. it isexpensive. so you need to be careful with how you're doingthat i am going to top it with just a little bit of sea salt.and of course we're going to add this super food kale. it hasa little trick to it to keep it nice and tender. see the rib init? we're going to rip it off

the rib, course i do this withgloves. of course. you take a little bit of your oil and youactually bruise it. now wait till you see how bright greenand much more aesthetically pleasant it is. look at thedifference. oh my gosh! what a great trick for me. and it'stender. so we start with doing that. we have some of the beatgreens which comes off of those golden beats there, we'regoing to tear that in there. this we go with the darker greenlettuces. okay. they're what helps in the diet, light coloredthings don't help. we have

cherry tomatoes, againantioxidants, we have the nuts, little bit of walnuts. and ofcourse you got your orange and your grapefruit. and what aboutthis over here? and that is another super food! ancientgrain farrow. this is so healthy and you know something foreveryone to eat. not just you know people who are battlingcancer, but everyone should be eating like this. exactly.exactly. it's a better way to eat. you feel better. sometimeswhen we eat so poorly, we have to really go and almost cleanseourselves and start eating

healthy. and it takes a littletime to adjust your pallet but look at the colors. beautiful.let's top it with this. that is my favorite! oh my gosh! whatis that? those are golden beats! and we've utilized the wholething and we put in the beat green stalks. (music.) reallywhen you're doing the kale it's good to have gloves onand you can really get into a hold. hmmm this is so good!thank you so much! thank you for being part of our special, i doappreciate it! i want the recipe. oh you have it! pleasecome to my house one day and

make dinner for us! alright!only if you allow me to do all the healthy stuff. i'll cookfor you! i'll cook for you. awesome that's even a bonus!and if you'd like more information on all these recipesyou can go to miami cancer institute dot com you can alsogo to our website and that's the balancing act dot com thiswas really good. now i'm going to get a fork and do itproperly. (music.) thanks for joining us on thisspecial edition of the balancing act. and remember drink morewater, eat a diet rich in

antioxidants including, lots ofvegetables, fruits, nuts and fish high in omega 3. you knowit's a good checklist to all us, not just those with cancer.absolutely! and remember you can head to our facebook page andour website and you can follow us on twitter because we'vegot lots more there. we'll see you next time!
