(music) my name is basim mansour and i'mthe owner of a company called michael & son services inwashington, dc. a little over twenty years agoi took over a struggling family business when my fathersuddenly passed away. i was just nineteen years old. i've certainly experienced myfair share of financial struggles but through hardwork and determination i'm now running one of thelargest electrical, plumbing,
heating and coolingcompany's in the nation. every day my technicians comeacross some incredible people with heartbreaking stories. when they find they have nowhere to turn in a time of need that's when we come into lend a helping hand. shadi, what's up buddy? i actually just cameback from maryland, where i met a familyby the name of the caldwell's. they have two children, and theyoungest one is five weeks old
and she has a thyroid issue. which is basically likea small lump in her throat that can become infected at anytime completely close up, block her breathing passages. so she has to have surgeryat the end of the month. five weeks old having surgery? yes sir. oh, my god. the family, both of the parents work,
they work really hard, but likeeverybody else they're struggling with allthe medical bills. and so, they haveno hvac in their home. what you mean, no hvac?what are you talking about? no heat whatsoever in the home. looks like they have not hadheat for almost a year. they have this illchild in the house. another problem is, if the childdevelops a throat problem, that can infect the thyroid problem, from a cold or whatever.
so i think it's a familythat is definitely deserving and definitely needs some help. how did you find out about it? they actually saw theshow and they called in. okay. all right, do me a favor. just get someone thereto go take a look at it. with this surgery, if shehas it, will she be okay? yeah, they say the surgeryis a little risky, obviously with a five-week-old, sure.
but they think that the recoveryshould be pretty straightforward and she should befine after that, hopefully. all right, let's get them some heat. that little girlshouldn't have to suffer. she's already sufferedenough in her young life. right. all right? all right, i'm on it. thank you, shadi.
all right. shadi? yes? it's just too easy with you. i don't want to say anything. but i'm startingto expect it now, so i know, i know you are. it's just too easy, shadi. one of the greatest moments intime is when we discovered fire.
fire is a crucialhuman advantage. the source of food, warmth, and protection from predators. only the most innovativecan survive. if you can't, we can. if you can't, we can. michael and son. need to sell your house dueto financial difficulties call us now for an offerin seven minutes to sell your house in seven days. express homebuyers, we buy your house in seven days.

and everything was good. we were happy and smiling, andwhen they took her over to the weighing station, she just stopped breathing. that was pretty much thescariest moment of my life. the doctors andnurses rushed in, and they broughtmy daughter back. so you're happy and you'rejust glad to have her, and then there's something else. we found a-- i don't know-- iguess a mass on the back of her
head initially that we hadto go get checked out. and now you're nervous, you're worried every day, and she's constantlychecking her. she originally found this knotor a lump on her throat. just went to the doctor. they informed us that it was herthyroid and there was a growth and a cyst on her thyroid. we got sent to a specialist fromjohns hopkins but we saw them at medical center and theysaid they would have
to surgically remove it. we would have to wait until shewas about 10 weeks before they could do it surgically becausejust the risk of infection since she was so young. so we're going tobe going to surgery to get it removed january 28th. it's just a helpless feeling, you don't know what you can do. it seems like stuffjust keeps happening. it was kind of lucky thatwe happened to notice it,
because when wewent to her pediatrician, she was surprisedthat we noticed it because of just all of the rollsand fat that babies have. she was like,"i'm surprised you saw it." i'm just happy that i did and wewere able to catch it early. but the house is freezing soi have to stay in one room where we have the space heater. it's just scary becauseyou have this precious thing that you want to keep safe butyou don't have any control over
a situation likeyour hvac going out. over the summer, that's when it first happened. the ac stopped working. we have to dress our son up likehe's going outside to play. it's crazy. we all are sleepingin one room right now. and if he wants to go in hisroom to play with his toys and stuff that are in his roombecause everything can't fit in our room, we have to dress themlike he's going outside. put him in sweatshirtsand sweatpants, socks.
he's just goingto his room to play. it's very unfortunate. we were watching tvon saturday morning. we saw the program. we decided to send ina letter to get us help out for our hvac system. the quote that we got from thesummertime when it was out, how much it was going to be, we were anxious about how we'regoing to make this money.
we just had a baby. we have all these medical billswe have to pay. it's cold. i know last winter it was 12degrees, 7 degrees outside. i don't know how we wouldhave made it this winter if we didn't get helpfrom michael and son. it's just amazing fora business to help you out, the kindness of their heart likethat, because you just expect to have to make your way on yourown and do what you have to do. but there are businesses outhere, like michael and son,
that they would just give yousomething out of the kindness of their heart because they knowpeople need help out here. my name is juan crespo. i'm an installer technicianfor michael and son. i install new equipment, removeold ones, setting new ones in place, and that's whati do every day, all day long. today, we are installinga new 2-ton heat pump 13 seer made by carrier. we're going to take the old unitout, then i remove the box.
we custom made a new box that'sgoing to be under the unit. the new box has a built-infilter rack, so they can access the filter much more easier thanthe way how it is right now. the existing unitwas less than 10 seer. this is a 13, so they willdefinitely notice a difference on their utility bill. this unit now requiresmaintenance, so if the unit is serviced twice a year, they willhave the equipment for twenty, many, many years to come.
my name is john smith, and i'm an installer manager for a baltimore branch. what we did, in the backyard wemoved the condenser closer to the house to eliminate anyfurther issues with the line set with the lawnmowergoing over the top of it. existing unit used to be like10, 12 feet away from the house. it was prettyfar from the house. everything was undergroundthrough tubing. we relocated and now it'sgoing to be much easier
for them wheneverthey're doing the yard. the unit is not sitting in themiddle of the backyard. a typical timeframe for totalheat pump replacements is between six and nine hours, depending on the difficulty. i have two kids, and if i'm inthe same situation, definitely i would appreciate if someonewould do the same for me. actually when i received thecall from my supervisor saying that i've been selectedto help a family today, that really made my day.
i was very glad that theychose me for this project. it truly touches my heart thatthey do give back to their community, and it just makes mefeel better working for them. if i was in the same situationand michael and son, they come outand do this for me, this would just takea weight off my shoulders. i think this program is amazingto just be able to help people when they need it and just tospread the word around that people areout there to help you.
because i always thought that ihave to do this all by myself. i was reallyworried about money. to have a program like thiswhere people are going to help and other programs outthere that are doing it, it just bring so much relief to thefamilies that it affects. okay, the thermostat that we'reinstalling for you, it actually is fully programmable and it hasthree different settings. it has a setting for "away","home", and "sleep." this way, once youprogram it once,
you can just hit the "sleep"button saying you like it 70 when you're asleep, you justhit it before you go to bed. when you're away, when you guys leave, there will be more energyconservation if you just hit the "away" button, and thetemperature will drop down to say like 68 or 70. it'll save you moneyin the long run. when you're home and you like itnice and warm or toasty or whatever, you hit "home"and it will pop up
to the program that you want. another feature it has also,if you don't want to use this stuff, it has a "hold" button onit and it will operate just like a regular thermostat.i actually like this thermostat. i have the same one in my house. so it's apretty cool thermostat. we'll leave youall the instructions so you can program it. you've got toprogram it yourself
if you're away or at home.it's a smart thermostat. it does learn alittle bit by itself. the first couple of days you'regoing to be hitting thermostat button up and down because it'slearning as you're here. so don't think it'snot working correctly. the system will give younice and toasty. okay. we'll install it and we'llshow you everything and how to operate it. okay. need to sell your housewith major repairs?
we'll buy it as is. keep the heat insidethis winter with our high-tech heat and air windows. long windows is offering thesurprisingly affordable solution at only $99 a month. call michael and son today andturn to the experts at carrier right now,get a precision tune-up on your heating systemfor just $69. if you can, we can. michael and son.
it's one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind. we're setting up the flag now.houston, we have a problem. we can't do it.who in the world is that? there, we got the flag up now.you can't. we can. if you can, we can. michael and son. today, we're meeting mr. basimfrom michael and son. we're just going to let themknow how thankful we are that he chose us to give us a new unitand how much we appreciate all the work that was done.
i'm here in beautifulwaldorf, maryland. a beautiful sunny morningkind of chilly. here to meet a caldwell family.we've got gregory and monet. they have two beautiful kids. skyler was born with a thyroidissue that makes her susceptible to getting infections that couldactually press up against her larynx and causeher to not breathe. she's two months old andshe's about to have surgery at the end of this month.they reached out to us.
we were able to take care ofthem. so i'm here to meet them. let's go meet them. i hope they're home. your monet, right? yes, i'm monet. how you doing? i'm good, how are you? my name is basim. greg?
good, can i come in please? of course, of course. thank you so much. first of all, merry christmas. i'm guessing that's the babyright there? yes, skyler. i'm very intuitive about that.she's got beautiful pink on. how old is skyler right now? two weeks, no two months.
two weeks or two months, whichone is it? two months, sorry. very nice. she has a thyroid condition? yes, she has a cyst on herthyroid in her throat, so we have to have surgery toget that removed this month. on january 28th. we're going to be praying forher, making sure it goes well. god willing, once that's all squared away,
she's a beautiful, healthy girl. yes. that is our plan. you can live without ac. i mean, it's very uncomfortable. she can live without ac. but when it got cold, how badwas that for you guys? it was really bad. it gets so cold in here.
it's not the brightest, the sun doesn't come in a lot, so it's a lot colderbecause of that. it's no difference than outside. it's like when you walk in thehouse, you're still outside. how did you guys deal with it,how did you cope with that? what did you guys do? a lot of layers. we have a spaceheater in our room, so everybody sleeps in our room.
and it's just a lot of stayingunderneath blankets, not too much moving around. what kind of quotes didyou get to replace the system? about $4000, $5000. i have some very goodfriends at carrier. first of all, it's reallynice and warm in here. yes it is. it's really nice and warm. but i have some very, very goodfriends at carrier that
basically give me systemsanytime i ask for them. they're just super nice people. so who came in it and installedthe system, do you remember? john smith and juan came in. they came early and knocked onthe door, took everything out... like the couchesand everything or what? no, they took outthe old system. okay, i just want to be clear. we don't take outthe couches, right?
okay, i just want tobe clear on that. out back, the old systemwas a few feet from the house. we're not sure why.they came and took that out. put it closer to the house, likei guess it's supposed to be. put a new system in. explained how it worked, how our new thermometer worked and how to set everything. in the old system, it was hardto take the filters out because the doorframe was in the way,so they built something custom.
it was moved over so thatwe could take the filters out and we could change it. it was just a surprise that wewould have anybody help us out. you grow up thinking you've gotto do everything by yourself, and to have someone helpus out makes us feel like we can go on help other people. this feeling is amazing, that someone out thereis looking out for you. well, i will tell you this.
the more that you give fromyourself, from your heart, the more you give, the morethings come back to you. no matter what levelof life you're at, you could always helpsomebody else out. you know what i'm saying?who is this? noah, come here, buddy. go see daddy. where's the ark? he's just waking up
oh, boy. that's a beautiful kid, beautiful family. i wish you nothingbut the best here. i'd love to see the system, where we did it,if you don't mind. i'll just let you hold the baby. okay. oh, wow, there she is. it was originally here, but it would bang against
so now you can change yourfilter really easily. i got you, i got you. well, that definitelylooks like an hvac system. i want to thank you forletting me in your house. thank you, thank you for all ofthis, actually for everything. it's my pleasure. like i said, when you cando good for somebody else and pass it on, you're justgiving it back to me. when you can go aheadand just do something,
to just help somebody else, make somebody else smile, that to me, is the way youcan repay me back. so i'm going toleave you guys alone. i'm going to let you guysenjoy this wonderful day, enjoy your kids, and i'm goingto get out of your hair. guys, thank you so much. thank you. i want to wish youguys a merry christmas and happy new year as well.
thank you, you too. but actually, i have onemore thing for you guys. noah? hey, buddy,i heard you like fish and sharks and stuff like that. no, i want to go back. you want what? he wants to go watch tv. i'm sorry, but i can't do that.
in any event, i understand thatyou guys just want to go to the aquarium, something like that. so i got you some tickets forthe aquarium for tomorrow with some backstage passesso you can kind of go behind the scenesand see the aquarium. is it cool with you, noah? you want to go to the aquarium and see the fishiesand the sharks? okay?
that's good, stamp of approval. i want to see sharks. you do? i do too, but notin the open water. in a tank all day long. in an aquarium. can i see sharks? and whales and fish. i don't know about whales.
and the dolphins. you can see the dolphins. yes, i'm sure you're interestedin dolphins, all right. i like to see a dolphin. you want to see a dolphin? okay, all right, that's a good aspiration. also, you're probably busy withthe kids and don't have a lot of expendable income justto go out yourselves. so basically what i'm going todo is i'm going to give you
some dinner for you guys, for you and your wife, to go to thecharthouse in annapolis. is that a placeyou guys wanted to go? all right, so we're going toarrange for you guys to go to charthouse where you guys canhave a little date night for yourselves, just to getaway and just spend some time with each other.all right? hopefully, god willing, it willbe a celebration of beautiful skyler's wonderful, successful surgery.
that's a good wayto celebrate that. all right guys, so i'm goingto leave you guys alone. take care. bye-bye, skyler, noah. say, "bye-bye." take care, brother. keep it real, brother. bye. all right, buddy.
i'll see you later, buddy. bye, thank you so much. bye-bye. oh man, that was amazing. here's a beautiful young family, greg and monet, beautiful, wonderful kids. you've got skyler and noah. cute little house. everything is great.
they just didn't have heat. they didn't have themoney to take care of it. it could have beena bad winter for them. and also, with the condition ofthe child, getting infections. it could have been bad. you know, i was glad thatwe could take care of this. i'm really glad that thislittle gift of a furnace meant a lot to the family. you never know what you can do,so i want to basically say this.
if you can do somethingto help somebody out, you could make a differencein somebody's life, i encourage you to do it,because it makes you feel great. we'll see you next one. wow, it's just amazing. this turned out fantastic. it was a pleasure to meetmr. basim from michael and son. he's sending my wholefamily to the aquarium. it's just really amazing andwe're really thankful.
and also lettingus go to dinner. he's taking us out to thecharthouse and its to be able to just go outand have no worries just a night with us two.it's going to be great. we're so thankful. has a dream of being a landlordbecome a nightmare for you? we'll buy your rental and dealwith your problem tenants. call us now for an offerin seven minutes. noah's been askingto come to the aquarium
